Chapter 51: The Soul in the Body, G‑d in the World

In short

Chapter 51 asks what it means that the Shechinah “dwells” in the Holy of Holies, if the whole world is full of G‑d’s glory. The key is our own soul: its essence is equally in every limb, yet its life is revealed through the brain. So too G‑d’s essence is equally in all worlds; what differs is how much of His light is revealed.

1.Where does the Shechinah dwell?

Translation

To clarify further the Yenuka’s words cited earlier (chapter 35), we first need some understanding of what it means that the Shechinah rested in the Holy of Holies, and wherever else the Shechinah is said to rest. What can this mean, when Scripture says, “The whole world is filled with His glory” (Yeshayahu 6), and the Tikkunei Zohar says, “No place is devoid of Him”?

Explanation

In chapter 35 the Yenuka, a child in the Zohar, taught that the Shechinah rests above a Jew’s head like a flame: the body is the wick and good deeds are the oil. But in Kabbalah oil usually stands for chochmah, wisdom. Why call deeds “oil”? The answer unfolds over this chapter and the next two. First: what does it mean for the Shechinah to “dwell” anywhere?

The same question applies wherever we say the Shechinah rests, even ten Jews learning Torah. If G‑d fills the whole world, how can He be in one place more than another? “It is more revealed there” is the usual answer, but what does that mean?

2.“From my own flesh I behold G‑d”

Translation

The answer follows the verse “From my own flesh I behold G‑d” (Iyov 19:26). A person’s soul pervades all 248 limbs of the body, from head to toe; yet its chief seat and residence is the brain, and from there it branches out into every limb. Each limb draws from it the vitality and capacity fitting for it, in keeping with its structure and character: the eye gains sight, the ear hearing, the mouth speech, the legs walking. This is plain to see, since a person senses in the brain all that goes on in the 248 limbs and all that they undergo.

Explanation

The verse is read literally: by looking at our own soul and body, we can see something of how G‑d relates to the world. And the soul has the same puzzle as the Shechinah. It is in every limb equally, yet its home is the brain, where every sensation is felt and from where each limb gets its abilities.

Notice “suited to it”. A note on this line explains: the eye does not turn a plain, colorless life into sight, the way colored glass seems to color the water inside it. The power to see comes from the soul itself; otherwise the brain could not tell a sight from a sound. The soul already holds all these different powers.

3.The soul itself is not divided

Translation

Now, the variety of powers and vitality that the limbs draw from the soul does not stem from any division in the soul’s own essence, as though it were split into 248 separate pieces, each lodged in a different spot matching the form and location of a limb. Were that so, the soul’s essence would itself have a bodily form, a shape and image like the body’s, G‑d forbid. Instead, the entire soul is a single spiritual entity, simple, free of any bodily shape and of any notion of location, dimension or physical boundary, in its very essence. One cannot say, then, that its essence is present in the brain more than in the legs, for its essence lies outside the category of location and physical boundary. Rather, within its essence are included 613 kinds of powers and vitality, which emerge from concealment into activity and disclosure to animate the 248 limbs and 365 blood vessels of the body. They do this by becoming vested in the nefesh hachiyunis (the soul that animates the body), which likewise possesses these 248 and 365 powers and vitality.

Explanation

Now the Alter Rebbe heads off a mistake. The soul is not cut into 248 pieces, one for each limb; that would give it the shape of a body. Its essence is “simple”: not one the way a family or a nation is one, made of many members, but one with no parts at all. Place and size do not apply to it, so it is no more in the head than in the toe.

How, then, does each limb get its own power? The 613 powers are “contained” in the soul, hidden, the way an ability waits until it is used. When the soul gives life to the body they come out, clothed in the animating soul, which has 613 matching powers. So the soul has two sides: its essence, beyond description, and the life it gives the body.

4.The brain: where the soul is revealed

Translation

Regarding the flow of all 613 kinds of powers and vitality out of the soul’s concealment into the body to animate it, it was said that the chief seat and residence of this flow and disclosure is wholly in the brain. For that reason the brain is first to receive its own fitting power and vitality, according to its structure and character: chochmah, binah and daas (wisdom, understanding and knowledge), the faculty of thought, and everything that pertains to the mind. Beyond this, the sum total of all the vitality destined for the remaining limbs is also gathered and vested in the brain. That is the principal source of the flow, where the entire soul’s light and life come into the open. From there a radiance goes out to each of the other limbs, and every one takes the power and vitality fitting for it, according to its structure and character: the eye discloses the faculty of sight, the ear the faculty of hearing, and likewise the rest. Every faculty radiates outward from the brain, as is known. So the brain is the chief residence of the whole soul in its disclosed form, since the totality of the vitality that flows from it is disclosed there, and only rays of that total vitality shine out from it to all the body’s limbs, like the sunlight that streams into the inner chambers of a house. (The heart, too, is nourished by the brain; hence the mind rules it by nature, as noted earlier.)

Explanation

So when we say the soul “lives” in the brain, we mean its revealed side, the life it gives the body, not its essence. (Its “abode” there is revealed; its “dwelling” there is all-embracing and hidden.) The brain receives first: its own powers, intellect and thought, and also, gathered together, the life meant for every other limb before it reaches them.

The sun gives the picture. The sun itself never enters our rooms; its rays do. So the soul as a whole is revealed in the brain, and only rays of it reach the eye, the ear and the foot.

Chapter 12 said the mind rules the heart by nature; here is the reason: even the heart gets its life from the brain.

5.G‑d’s essence is equally everywhere

Translation

Exactly so, by way of analogy, does the Ein Sof, blessed be He, fill all the worlds and animate them. Every world holds countless, boundless creatures: endless myriads of kinds and ranks of angels, souls and the like. The worlds themselves, too, are beyond number or measure, each above the next, and so forth.

Yet the essence of the Ein Sof, blessed be He, is identical in the upper worlds and the lower ones, just like the soul in the analogy above. The Tikkunim (Tikkunei Zohar, Introduction) say: “Concealed beyond all that is concealed.” That is to say, even within the concealed upper worlds He remains veiled and hidden, exactly as He is veiled and hidden within the lower ones; for “no thought can grasp Him whatsoever,” not even in the loftiest worlds. Consequently, as He is present there, so is He present in the lowest of places.

Explanation

“Truly the same, but by way of analogy”: the soul really does teach us about G‑d, yet the distance between any picture and G‑d Himself is infinite. The Ein Sof, “the Infinite”, fills countless worlds and creatures, each on its own level.

His essence, like the soul’s, is not more in one place than another. “Hidden from all the hidden” does not mean more hidden than other hidden things. It means hidden even from the hidden worlds, the lofty realms we cannot see. No thought grasps Him, not ours and not theirs. Measured against the Infinite, the highest creature is no closer than the lowest.

Translation

Where upper and lower worlds differ is in the vitality the Ein Sof, blessed be He, sends down and radiates out of concealment into disclosure (which is one reason the flow of vitality is termed “light”, as an analogy) in order to animate the worlds and their creatures. The upper worlds take it in a form somewhat more disclosed than the lower worlds do, and each of their creatures takes it in according to its own capacity and character, that character being shaped by the particular flow the Ein Sof, blessed be He, sends down and radiates to it.

The lower worlds, spiritual ones included, do not take it in so openly. They receive it only through numerous garments, in which the Ein Sof, blessed be He, wraps the vitality and light He sends down and radiates to animate them.

Explanation

If His essence is everywhere alike, where do the differences come from? From the light. A ray comes out of the sun and shows something of it, while the sun itself stays where it is. So what reaches the worlds is not G‑d’s essence but a revealed flow from Him, and that is why Kabbalah calls it “light”. Here there are levels.

Even the higher worlds receive it only “somewhat” more openly. Each creature receives in its own way, as each limb draws its own power from the soul. A note on this line adds that a creature’s nature does not hide the light; it is the very form of the flow G‑d gives it.

In the higher worlds the garments are fine; in the lower worlds they are many and dense, hiding that it is G‑d’s light at all.

Translation

So many and so strong are the garments in which the Ein Sof, blessed be He, clothes and hides the light and life, that with it He created this truly physical and material world. He brings it into being and gives it life with the life and light that He draws down and shines to it, a light clothed, covered and hidden within the many and mighty garments that conceal and hide the light and life, until no light or life at all is seen or revealed, only physical, material things that look dead. But within them there is light and life that constantly creates them from nothing into being, so that they do not go back to being nothing and nought, as they were. And this light comes from the Ein Sof, blessed be He, except that it is wrapped in numerous garments. Etz Chaim teaches that the light and life of the physical globe of the earth, seen by human eyes, comes from malchus of malchus of Asiyah, and within it is malchus of Yetzirah, and so on, until within all of them are the ten sefiros of Atzilus, which are one with their Emanator, the Ein Sof, blessed be He.

Explanation

Our world is where the garments are heaviest, so strong that they produce physical matter. The text speaks above all of the inanimate: a stone shows no life, while plants and animals show some. Yet the stone exists only because G‑dly light creates it from nothing at every moment; without that light it would return to nothing. Its lifeless look comes from the garments, not from any absence of G‑d.

Asiyah is the lowest of the four worlds, and malchus the last of the ten sefiros, the G‑dliness of each world. Each sefirah contains all ten, so malchus of malchus of Asiyah is the lowest point of all. Yet within it is malchus of Yetzirah, within that malchus of Beriah, and so up to Atzilus, whose sefiros are one with G‑d. The same light is in the stone and in Atzilus; only the covering differs. How this explains the Holy of Holies, and the Yenuka’s “oil”, comes in chapters 52 and 53.

The Yesod: G‑d is everywhere; holiness is where He is revealed

Chapter 51 takes on a question every thinking Jew meets sooner or later: if G‑d is everywhere, what can it mean that a place, a day or a person is holy? The Alter Rebbe answers by looking inward, “from my flesh”. Our own soul shows two truths at once. Its essence is in the toe as fully as in the brain; no limb is more alive than another. Yet its life and powers are revealed in the brain and flow out from there.

So it is with G‑d. His essence is not more in the Holy of Holies than on an ordinary street, and not more in the highest angel than in a stone. It is equally present everywhere and equally hidden from everyone, because no created mind can grasp Him. What differs is the light, the revealed flow He draws to each world and creature, and how heavily it is covered. Holiness does not mean more of G‑d. It means more of G‑d revealed.

As far as G‑d’s essence is concerned, refinement gives no advantage and coarseness puts no one further away. The essence is present everywhere by its own power, not because anything below can hold it.

This changes how a person sees the world. The physical world looks dull and far from G‑d, yet it is being created from nothing at this moment by His light. Its dullness is a garment, not an absence. And the body is not a stranger to the soul: every power it has, to see, hear, speak and walk, was first in the soul and comes from it.

It also lays the ground for what follows. If holiness means revealed light, the question becomes where, and through what, G‑d’s light is revealed in this world. Chapters 52 and 53 build on this to explain the Holy of Holies and the Yenuka’s “oil”.

Points to ponder

  1. Where do I treat G‑d as more present in one place, instead of more revealed there?
  2. The soul is as present in my feet as in my brain. Which ordinary part of my day have I written off as empty of G‑d?
  3. When the world looks flat and unspiritual, can I remember it is being created from nothing right now?
  4. My mind rules my heart by nature. Which pull of the heart have I told myself I cannot control?
