Chapter 52: The Brain of the World: the Shechinah and the Torah
Chapter 51 compared G‑d’s presence in the worlds to the soul in the body. This chapter finds the “brain” in that picture. The Shechinah, the G‑dly light meant for the worlds, is too intense for any world to receive directly. It is clothed in the Torah, G‑d’s will and wisdom, and from its place in the Torah of each world, that world’s Holy of Holies, it gives life to everything in it.
1.The brain of the world
In a person’s soul, the chief disclosure of its overall vitality is in the brain, and the limbs receive only a light and a force that radiates to them from the source of that disclosed life in the brain. Exactly so, by way of analogy, the chief disclosure of the overall flow of vitality animating the worlds and their creatures is wrapped in and contained within His will, wisdom, understanding and knowledge, may He be blessed. These are termed mochin (“brain”), and they in particular are what is vested in the Torah and its mitzvos.
The disclosure of this overall flow is the wellspring from which the worlds draw their vitality, each in its own specific way. From this wellspring only a radiance goes out and shines, like sunlight spreading from the sun, to give an illustration, or like the bodily limbs’ powers that issue from the brain, as described earlier.
Chapter 51 drew a picture. The soul’s essence fills the whole body equally and is felt in none of it. What the body feels is the soul as its source of life, gathered first in the brain, which sends each limb the power it needs. So too, G‑d Himself is equally everywhere and grasped nowhere; the worlds differ only in how much of His life-giving light is revealed in them.
Now the Alter Rebbe names the “brain” of the worlds: G‑d’s will, wisdom, understanding and knowledge. And where are they? In the Torah and its mitzvos. That the law is so and not otherwise is His will; the reasoning inside it is His wisdom and understanding. The light meant for all the worlds is gathered there first, and each world receives only a ray of it.

2.Six names for one source
This source is what is called alma d’isgalya (“the revealed world”), matronisa (“the queen”), ima tata’ah (“the lower mother”) and Shechinah, from the words “and I will dwell (v’shachanti) among them” (Shemos 25:8). It is named for this: here the light of the Ein Sof first begins to be disclosed; it draws down and shines to the worlds in a revealed way; from this source there is drawn to each thing the particular light and life that suits it; and it dwells and is clothed within them to give them life.
That is why, by way of analogy, it is called “the mother of the children” and “the community of Israel”: from this source the souls of Atzilus were emanated and the souls of Beriah were created, and so on. All of them are nothing but the spreading out of the life and light from this source, the one termed Shechinah, the way rays spread out from the sun.
Each name, read with the clause that explains it, says something different. It is “the revealed world” because here the light of the Ein Sof first becomes revealed. It is “the queen” because it receives from the King, and through it His light shines to the worlds openly. It is “the lower mother” because, like a mother with many children, it gives each creature the particular life it needs (the “upper mother” is binah). And it is “Shechinah”, “indwelling”, because it actually dwells within each thing and keeps it alive.
It is given the names “mother of the children” and “the congregation of Israel” because it is the source of Jewish souls: those of Atzilus were emanated from it, those of Beriah created. Yet everything that exists is only a ray of this source, as sunlight is a ray of the sun.

3.Too bright to receive
But the Shechinah itself, which is the beginning and core of the revelation, the light with which the Ein Sof, blessed be He, shines to the worlds in a revealed way, and which is the source of every flow of life in all the worlds [for all the life in them is only light spreading from it, like light spreading from the sun], the worlds cannot bear or receive the light of the Shechinah so that it should actually dwell and be clothed within them, without a garment that hides and conceals its light from them. Otherwise they would be nullified out of existence entirely in their source, just as sunlight vanishes into its source inside the sun’s globe, where this light cannot be seen at all, only the body of the sun itself.
The worlds live on rays of the Shechinah; the Shechinah itself they could not survive. Sunlight is something real in a room, but inside the sun it cannot even be seen as light; there is only the sun. If the Shechinah dwelt in a world openly, that world would be swallowed into its source like a ray inside the sun.
And this is not yet G‑d’s essence; it is the light already meant for the worlds, and even that must be covered. So it needs a garment, something that hides its light and yet lets its life through to every creature.

4.A garment higher than what it covers
What garment, then, can conceal and clothe it, and yet not be dissolved out of existence by its light? It is G‑d’s will, blessed be He, together with His wisdom and the rest, which are vested in the Torah and its mitzvos, the things “revealed to us and to our children” [Devarim 29:28]. For “the Torah issues from wisdom”, namely supernal wisdom (chochmah ila’ah), which is immeasurably above the revealed world, since “He is wise, though not with a wisdom that can be known,” and so on. As explained earlier, the light of the Ein Sof, blessed be He, is wrapped in supernal wisdom and fully one with it: He and His wisdom are a single unity. It simply descended through stages of concealment, level after level, along the descent of the worlds, until it came to be vested in physical things, namely the Torah’s 613 mitzvos.
The garment is the Torah and its mitzvos, G‑d’s will and wisdom. They can hold the Shechinah without being swallowed because they come from higher than it. The Shechinah is malchus, the last of the ten sefiros, the level at which His light turns toward the worlds. The Torah comes from chochmah, His wisdom, which is one with Him. A ray dissolves in the sun because the sun is its source; the Torah does not come from the Shechinah, so the Shechinah cannot swallow it.
But if the worlds could not bear the Shechinah, how can they bear something higher still? The last line answers it. The Torah came down step by step until it was dressed in physical things: the 613 mitzvos, laws about an ox, a field, a loan. We learn them and are not consumed, yet the wisdom inside them is higher than the Shechinah. Higher than what it covers, yet low enough to reach us: that is what makes it the garment.

As it came down through the chain of worlds from one world to the next, the Shechinah too came down and was clothed in it in each and every world. This is the chamber of the Holy of Holies in each and every world. As is written in the Zohar and Etz Chaim: the Shechinah, which is malchus of Atzilus [the disclosure of the Ein Sof’s light, blessed be He, and of the vitality radiating to the worlds; hence it is named “the word of G‑d” and, so to speak, “the breath of His mouth”, by way of analogy, as in a person speech reveals his hidden, concealed thought to the listeners], is clothed in the chamber of the Holy of Holies of Beriah, which is the chochmah, binah and daas of Beriah. And through their being clothed in malchus of Beriah, the souls and angels of Beriah were created.
And from there, too, comes the Talmud that we have. As cited earlier from the Tikkunim: in the world of Beriah, the wisdom, understanding and knowledge of the Ein Sof, blessed be He, shine and flow in a state of great contraction, so that the souls and angels, which are limited and finite, can receive from these levels of chochmah, binah and daas. That is why the Talmud comes from there, for it too is a matter of chochmah, binah and daas: the Talmud is the reasons of the laws in their fully clarified form, and the reasons are chochmah, binah and daas. The laws themselves come from the attributes (middos) of the Ein Sof, blessed be He, which are kindness, judgment, mercy etc. From them come the permitted and the forbidden, the kosher and the unfit, liability and exemption, as written in the Tikkunim.
Now the picture becomes a map. As the Torah comes down from world to world, the Shechinah comes down with it, and in each world it rests in that world’s “Holy of Holies”: its chochmah, binah and daas, the Torah of that world. So G‑d is everywhere, yet the Shechinah dwells in one place, as in the Holy of Holies of the Temple, where the Tablets of the Torah lay in the Ark.
Up to now the Alter Rebbe has avoided the Kabbalah’s term malchus; he uses it here because he is quoting the Etz Chaim. Because malchus is the level at which G‑d’s light is revealed to the worlds, it is called His “word”, as speech reveals to others what was hidden in the mind. The Shechinah first enters the “brain” of Beriah, and only through Beriah’s own malchus are its souls and angels created.
From the same place comes the Talmud: its reasoning is chochmah, binah and daas, greatly contracted so that finite beings can take hold of it. “That we have” is exact. The Torah itself is one with G‑d (chapter 23); the Talmud in the form we study it is that wisdom as it is shaped in Beriah.

Through malchus of Atzilus being clothed in malchus of Beriah, it is clothed in the chamber of the Holy of Holies of Yetzirah, which is the chochmah, binah and daas of Yetzirah. And through their being clothed in malchus of Yetzirah, the ruchos (spirits) and the angels of Yetzirah were formed.
The Mishnah we study likewise derives from there: it consists of the settled rulings, which also issue from the chochmah, binah and daas of the Ein Sof, blessed be He.
Only, the levels of chochmah, binah and daas, which are the reasons of the laws, are clothed and hidden within the body of the laws and are not revealed. The body of the laws, which is revealed, is the very radiance of the attributes of the Ein Sof, blessed be He, in revealed form. As cited earlier from the Tikkunim: “Six sefiros nest in Yetzirah,” which are, in general, two lines, right and left: to be lenient, from the side of kindness, that is, to permit, so that it can rise up to G‑d; or to be strict etc. And all of it follows the supernal wisdom of Atzilus, with binah and daas included in it, and they are united with the Ein Sof, blessed be He. For within all of them are clothed the chochmah, binah and daas of Atzilus, with which the light of the Ein Sof, blessed be He, is united in a perfect unity.
The pattern repeats one world down. In Beriah souls (neshamos) are “created”; in Yetzirah spirits (ruchos) are “formed”. Each world brings forth its own level of soul, and the verb follows the world’s name.
The Mishnah comes from Yetzirah. It contains wisdom too, but hidden: it states the law without the reasoning. What shows is the ruling, and a ruling is G‑d’s kindness or strictness made visible. To permit is kindness, and notice to whom: the permitted thing can now be used for a mitzvah and so rise to G‑d.
A chassidic story, told in more than one version, has a rav sit up a whole night over a question on a slaughtered animal’s lung until he could rule it kosher. When the butcher said the animal was not worth his night, he answered: if you could see how it is begging to be declared kosher, you would not say that.
None of this makes the Mishnah or the Talmud less than G‑d’s own wisdom. All of it follows the supernal wisdom of Atzilus, which is one with the Ein Sof. The Torah we have is shaped by the worlds it passed through; what is inside it is the same.

In the same way, the Shechinah came down and was clothed in the chamber of the Holy of Holies of Asiyah.
Each of these three worlds is divided into myriads of levels, which are also called particular worlds. And malchus of Atzilus, which is clothed in the malchus
Note: This explains the words of the verse, “Your kingship is the kingship of all worlds” (Tehillim 145:13).
of each particular world, comes down and is clothed in the chamber of the Holy of Holies, which is the chochmah, binah and daas of the world one level below it.
The descent continues into Asiyah. And each of the three worlds contains countless smaller worlds, with the same pattern in every one: the malchus of a higher world, carrying the Shechinah, enters the chochmah, binah and daas of the world just below and gives it life.
The note reads a verse we say daily in Ashrei. “Your kingship” and “the kingship of all worlds” are not two things: G‑d’s own kingship is the inner life of the kingship of every world.

8.Everything from the word of G‑d
Thus from the Shechinah vested in the innermost chamber of every world, whether a general world or a particular one, light and vitality flow out and spread through that entire world and all its creatures, souls, angels and the rest. Every one of them came into being through the ten utterances of Creation, which are “the word of G‑d”, and that word is what is termed Shechinah.
The chapter closes where it began. Every creature in every world lives from the Shechinah resting in the Holy of Holies of its own world, the Torah of that world. That is what creation by ten utterances means: G‑d’s “word” is the Shechinah, His light turned toward the world. So all life passes through Torah, the way every limb lives through the brain.

The Yesod: The light we can live with reaches us through Torah
Chapters 51 and 52 answer a question every serious student of Kabbalah should ask. The books speak of countless levels of G‑dliness: worlds, sefiros, lights. How do so many levels fit with “G‑d is one”? The levels are not parts of G‑d. He is one and undivided, and no world grasps Him as He is. The levels describe how His light is revealed to the worlds, each according to its capacity, as the soul is whole in every limb yet each limb receives it differently through the brain.
Even the light meant for the worlds, the Shechinah, could not be received directly. A creature exposed to its source would cease to be, like a ray inside the sun. That G‑d hides is what lets us exist. And what hides Him is not a wall. It is the Torah: His will and wisdom, higher than the Shechinah, yet come down until it speaks of oxen, fields and money. Through it the Shechinah dwells in each world without dissolving it.
This changes how a person sees the world. If the life of every world flows from the Shechinah resting in that world’s Torah, then Torah is not a set of rules laid on top of a world that runs by itself. It is the brain through which the world lives. A limb that follows the brain is not giving up its nature; it is doing what it was made for. A life that runs by Torah is in step with the source of its own existence.
And it changes what learning is. The Talmud and the Mishnah we open are G‑d’s wisdom as it was shaped on its way down. The words are within reach, and what is inside them is one with G‑d. Learning even a law about a goring ox, a person holds the very garment in which His presence rests. The Holy of Holies is not only a room in Jerusalem. It is the Torah in every world.

Points to ponder
- When I think of G‑d, do I mistake the light I can grasp for G‑d Himself?
- The worlds could not bear the Shechinah unhidden. Where in my life is G‑d’s hiddenness actually the kindness that lets me be?
- Do I live as if Torah were rules laid on top of my life, or as the brain my life runs through?
- Is there a part of Torah I treat as too practical or too “low” to carry G‑d’s presence?
- What could I “permit to rise” this week, by using it for a mitzvah?
